Radford, VA
St. Albans Sanatorium located in Radford Virginia, was constructed in 1892 and was originally a Lutheran Boys School. George W. Miles, the headmaster of the school demanded that his students perform well in both the classroom and in sports. This high demand and stern leadership gave the school a reputation for being rough and extremely competitive. After the headmasters death in 1903 the school went downhill fast and closed 8 years later.
In 1916, Dr. John C King purchased the school and turned it into a psychiatric hospital. What was originally planned to be a top notch hospital actually turned into a nightmare for many of the patients. The treatments that were used included lobotomies, electroconvulsive therapy ECT and hydrotherapy, which left many patients brain dead or just plain dead. In the 1990’s the hospital was sold to Carilion Health System which they ended up vacating in 2003. A former patient of the hospital bought St. Albans and now hosts many paranormal investigations along with other events during the year.
