Sweet Springs Sanitarium

Sweet Springs, WV

Located in Sweet Springs West Virginia, the  Sweet Springs Resort and Spa was founded in 1792. The resort is notorious for its natural hot springs. The original buildings at the springs were taken down in 1830. A new brick classical style hotel was completed by 1833 and the Sweet Springs Company was formed in 1836.George Washington, James Madison and Robert E. Lee were among some of the historical figures that have visited and stayed at the property. In 1857 new buildings were added onto the property. The Sweet Springs flourished from 1820 till the American Civil War. It is documented that in 1864 the resort was visited by union soldiers and that they set up camp somewhere close to the hotel. 

The Sweet Springs Resort went bankrupt in 1930 and closed. In 1941 the state of West Virginia purchased the property and used it to treat patients with tuberculosis. From 1945 to 1991 it became  the Andrew S. Rowan Memorial Home for the elderly. In 1991 the facility closed.
