This ornate 1,300 seat theatre was built in 1928 at a cost of $900,000, $11 million by today’s standards. Named after one of the founders of Richmond, William Byrd II, this cinematic gem is still is a favorite destination for a night out. And legend has it; souls long departed still find a way to drop back in. A photo of the Byrd’s early days. Look closely, and you’ll see the Disney movie that we’ve all heard so much about is premiering – Cinderella, that is. Some of the incredible art proudly displayed in the Byrd’s lobby. This is Robert Coulter, a long-time manager of the Byrd who passed on years ago. He’s been spotted in the theatre enjoying a movie again and again. Theatre area with its incredible decor. Closer view of a side balcony in the theatre area. ‘Mr. President, I’d like you to meet Mr. John Wilkes Booth.’ This is the amazing chandelier that hangs over the theatre area. The photo doesn’t do it justice – it’s absolutely massive. Second floor balcony area. This is where Robert Coulter, the Byrd’s deceased manager, has been spotted watching a movie. Looks like the spirit of cinema lives on.
